1、关于if it be a fault的使用方法。
曹老师主要讲了三点：
1. 古英语的遗留。
2. 现代英语，只有很正式的文体才用，比如法律条文，合同，法典中。
3. 在现代英语的一般交际中，用 if it is a fault， 代替 if it be a fault。
这三点我基本赞同。但，在现代英语的一般交际中，有时也见到这种表达，而且就在一般英语的会话中。所以，我觉得，这种使用方法另有新意。 最直接的理解是，if it be a fault 是 if it should be a fault 的省略说法。可以看作是虚拟语气的一种表达形式，是对所述状况不确定的一种假设。if it be a fault, 翻译为 “假设它是个错误的话”，暗示说话人并不觉得是个错误，如此说是为了婉转和留有空间。又如：
Are you planning to sell the house, and if this be so, how much do you want?
句子意思是：“你计划卖掉房屋吗？如果是如此的话，你开价多少呢？”
这句话表示：说话人对售房者“是不是卖掉房屋不确定”，因此说话留有空间，让他们不觉唐突。
其实，在美国英语中，这种虚拟使用方法常常见到。又如：
If it be right, do it boldly. 倘若感觉是对的，就大胆地去做
If this be the case, he deserves you. 当真如此的话，他的确配得上你。
Leave out my name from the gift if it be a burden, but keep my song. 倘若我的名字成了负累，就将它从这礼物上拭去吧，但请保留我的诗歌。
If this be the price of the childs sympathy, I cannot pay it. 假如这是换取孩子同情的代价，我是不可以支付的。
